Her mentor told Licht afterwards that "it felt like an attack on a student" and that she had never experienced anything like it. "[2][j], The evening the story ran, Ruderman called Fierceton back and told her she had received some anonymously written emails casting doubt on what she had written. And I think its striking to read that back and just see how clearly distressed and distraught I was in continuing to push on that series of questions about a really traumatic experience. As a result she withdrew from the Rhodes Scholarship; a sympathetic Penn faculty member has paid her Oxford tuition in its stead.[2]. [2], Over the middle of 2020, Fierceton became active in the Black Lives Matter protests at Penn. Anything interesting in that that you noticed? She entered foster care only at the age of 17, after making a complaint of abuse against Dr. Morrison a complaint that a court later found not to be credible. Like I just havent, really, there to be a lot of information about me publicly. And that dynamic, I would say, [laughs] probably played a big part in all of this. This is derived from language in the federal Higher Education Act, which ties first-generation status to the educational attainment of the parent the student "regularly resides with and receives support from". box, it's like you have to fit yourself in, saying: Are you the first in your family to attend? And so I was like, of course, Im going to respond again. And did you find this after The New Yorker article was published? Mackenzie Fierceton, a 2016 graduate of Whitfield School in Creve Coeur, lost the scholarship after allegations surfaced that she had provided "false narratives" to education officials, the New. As in her case, first responders had experienced similar delays in finding and reaching the building, and difficulties removing Driver once they did due to the same accessibility issues. They didnt respond, though Mackenzies biological mother has denied the allegations of abuse. How many people kind of fit that category that you interacted with, and how many kind of fit closer to your category, not just in your own interactions, but also in your research? Which as Im sure youve learned since is a complete and fundamental misunderstanding of poverty . Fierceton was born August 9, 1997, under the name Mackenzie Terrell, in Danbury, Connecticut,[1] to Carrie Morrison, a physician who would later head the breast imaging department at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, where the couple lived. Is that just an interpretation or did they say anything that suggested to you that the fact that you had gone to a private school and grown up in an upper-middle-class situation meant that you could never at any point consider yourself low-income? And she was shocked. She lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where she spent three days in intensive care. Because thats not how we understand poverty. The Inquirer story came out in November 2020. on about your day, ask yourself: How likely is it that the story you just read would have been produced by a different news outlet if The Intercept hadnt done it? Penn didnt respond to a request for comment, but in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, they write: Penn denies that there are accessibility problems with the Caster Building which contributed to Mackenzies medical emergency or to [Cameron] Drivers death. Now-provost Beth Winkelstein told this person: I know youre here as a supporter for MacKenzie, but you cannot speak. MF: And its mentioned briefly. In retrospect, I just honestly wish I had never written about those people, but it was kind of one of those things where I was like: OK, I need to make my point. Fierceton had apparently made much of her status as a 'first generation, low income' student, an abuse survivor who aged out of foster care. [2] Ruderman's story, published the next day, began:[13]. Mackenzie went to a private prep school, Whitfield, in St. Louis and was an active student. In other words, if you are parent who says that you are wishing your daughter well and youre telling the authorities that shes just mentally ill and its just a really, really sad and tragic case that shes making up all of these allegations of abuse and throwing herself down stairs, and beating herself up all for cries for help, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera you wouldnt then also pursue a multi-year long effort to destroy her life. So they didnt ask about that in this meeting. And especially, again, like these stereotypes of black and brown, low-income families, the knee-jerk reaction is like: Oh, well, theyre unequipped to be a parent. As in Fierceton's case, it took an hour to remove Driver from the building. RG: And that feels like one of them where it feels like the system is willfully misunderstanding reality in order to bend it in their direction. Who are your biological family? Betsy Reed is The Intercepts editor in chief. I have some of my own theories, but I want to hear yours. And I kind of felt like things were resolved until the next week when there was more [laughs] more downhill event. And so they had to see some benefit to them in doing this. "I think that we could contribute to the community, the broader Philadelphia community, and the West Philadelphia community more positively, instead of doing things that are not only undermining them but are actively policing them, and end up creating and perpetuating more violence," she told The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university's student newspaper. She didnt know any of the circumstances of his death. And then theres also foster siblings in the sense of other people who are in the foster care system who youre living with. Is that your experience with it as well? So one of the questions that you mentioned that they asked was about your essay , which, correct me if Im wrong, but I think it begins saying something along the lines of: Youre in the hospital, you looked in the mirror, and you couldnt recognize yourself, you couldnt recognize your features. And she quickly got interest of a book deal because she was obviously such a great writer. At her request Penn kept her contact information out of the school's directory on its website. And if you read it aloud, its almost exactly the length of the phone call. What kind of a group is that? And it was also the community was kind of divided. The 23-year-old planned to use. So that was what that specific sentence in The New Yorker was referencing is this kind of condensing this group of people and to one sentence. She definitely asked some questions about it. And I didnt get an answer. That is when I would trace it back to. Shes lying, shes a spoiled brat, this, that, and the other which looking back at the time I just felt absolutely horrible. And Ive brought my mentor with me. "I advised him that this was ridiculous, and this had to be a 'status thing", she said. Its a very under-researched field. I mean, youd been taking loss after loss, despite having the facts on your side. How long were you in the hospital? To me, it seems like any reader of the English language would read that in a literary sense , of its self-exploration, self-doubt, trauma. Am I right about that? The fact that they even challenged that really does expose a lot of whats going on here because I assume in their mind, theyre saying: Well, she went to this private school; she had a nice house; her mom probably drove a nice car maybe you even drove a decent car! Yeah. [14], The publicity led 150 Penn students to stage a walkout from classes to demonstrate in support of Fierceton. And I think psychologically one way people feel safer about it is to say: No, that happens to other people. And I think said something along the lines of there were things missing and it was distorted. In the presence of her mother that night at their house, Mackenzie repeated the same story to a visiting caseworker, who appeared to accept it. Like, I dont have the precise statistics in front of me, but if you asked people to guess at the number of people who will experience, say, two years of poverty in their life, people will miss it by magnitudes. Who will spend some significant amount of time in poverty. So Im not sure how much could have been missing. Its just so obvious that you fit the criteria for low-income, but it seems like they feel like you dont fit it in the spirit of how they want it. She was then admitted to Penn on a full scholarship, where she identified as a first-generation low-income (FGLI) student despite her background due to her estrangement from her parents and lack of financial support from them, a classification she says Penn officials told her was acceptable in those circumstances. RG: So you applied for your masters in social work and there was a question of whether to check the, what Ive learned is called the FGLI box: first-generation, low-income. RG: as a kid. [4] It took nearly an hour, during which Fierceton seized intermittently and never completely regained consciousness, for her to be taken to the hospital. And it was a very similar situation where it took everyone a long time to get to the building. [2], The trust notified Fierceton at the beginning of 2021 that it was conducting an investigation into the allegations. We dont believe you. [2], Two months later the COVID-19 pandemic emerged. When I came to Penn and saw all of these students who were living that life, there was a sense of community and solidarity amongst us, which was very powerful for me because I just felt so out of place. Mackenzies critics even began nitpicking how much blood was in her hair while she was in the intensive care unit. Mackenzie Fierceton (born Mackenzie Terrell on August 9, 1997; later Mackenzie Morrison, [1] : 63-64, 86 ) is an American activist and graduate student currently studying at Oxford University. RG: Who will spend some significant amount of time in poverty. They have since claimed that that is not what they [laughs] insinuated, I believe my former lawyer spoke to it in The New Yorker piece. So normally the term FGLI, its just an umbrella term for both. So you use what you have, uh, which are the definitions that were already out there. That is when I would trace it back to. I mean, youd been taking loss after loss, despite having the facts on your side. And then there was this other foster sibling who was the biological kid of the foster parents I was staying with, and spelling it out in that way. And so the fact that shes continued pursuing you to me kind of demonstrates the entire case. RG: And it has, has she stuck by that? Enough bruises? So those questions really came later. So I was like: OK, fine. But I just had a bad feeling and I started to try to find more information. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. Morrison then brought suit in circuit court to have the board's decision reviewed and reversed. But it doesnt mean you were always low-income, just that you are now. [2] Winkelstein, who has a Ph.D. in bioengineering and has studied injuries,[3] then proceeded to interrogate Fierceton at length about her abuse and hospitalization, in a manner that led Fierceton to believe that not only did Winkelstein doubt her story but had spoken with Morrison. And so youre becoming rather inconvenient to the university at that point , I would assume, which plays into the way that universities and elite structures think of diversity, I think. Raised in Chesterfield, Missouri, a West County suburb of St. Louis, she attended and graduated from the Whitfield School in Creve Coeur. In 2020, former foster child Mackenzie Fierceton received a Rhodes Scholarship as a self-identified first generation, low income student at the University of Pennsylvania. Even though I had, again, written statements from two ICU nurses who took care of me saying: Yes, there was blood, [laughs] theres photographs, and there still was the argument of like, there wasnt enough blood or your face wasnt so distorted you could couldnt tell who you were. She didnt know he was in the basement. The court granted Morrison a protection order against her former husband; Fierceton had no relationship with him from that time onward. But in this application they had two questions which are to determine financial aid. RG: And whats the difference between the U.S. and English system? It, too, alleged that Fierceton was misrepresenting herself as having been poor and grown up entirely in foster care, with many photos of Fierceton as a little girl on the beach and riding horses, and other activities usually associated with affluence. So you use what you have, uh, which are the definitions that were already out there. According to Fierceton, her mother pushed her down the stairs and then beat her extensively at the bottom. And because poverty and abuse are so pervasive in society and particularly in a country that has such a minimal social safety net and has so much violence. And then the other question was: Are you the first in your family to attend college? My understanding is there were two anonymous emails. Right. In The New Yorker piece, a nurse assigned to Mackenzie is quoted as saying, She had two black eyes, and her hair was full of blood. And Im like: I dont know what else I could give them that would possibly convince them if their belief is as a 15-year-old, 16-year-old was journaling about my experience of abuse and hiding it in an air vent, and it was actually secretly all a plan to like accuse my mother of abuse and go into foster care so I could have a sad story. You know, I honestly dont know. RG: in America. [1]:95, Judge Kristine Allen Kerr ultimately held for Morrison. RG: And I just want to read this for people. And then as the different internships, and then I went to get my masters in social work and all of this happened, I started to see that continue in different capacities while I was in different roles, seeing that theme in this relationship between foster care and the criminal justice system. RG: And so, like I mentioned earlier, I dont want to go over too much of the history that led up to your battle with Penn and with the Rhodes trust, because people can find that in The New Yorker article that came out recently, you went over that in some pretty decent length; in Katie Courics podcast in a recent interview there. But that was definitely a driving force for why I decided, ultimately, to withdraw because I felt like: OK, federal prison is no joke. That evening that the article came out is when I got a call from the reporter saying: I got this anonymous email that said X, Y, Z, and I wanted to let you know. "I really don't have words,'" she told a mentor at the Penn Women's Center. [3] "Mackenzie may have centered certain aspects of her background to the exclusion of othersfor reasons we are certain she feels are validin a way that creates a misimpression," the report said. [2][3], Fierceton had initially expected it would be easier for her to transition to college life than it was for other students, since she was not leaving a family behind at home. And eventually they filed a big wrongful death lawsuit in August 2020. By the end of the year she was in a third foster home. Well, Mackenzie, thank you so much for joining me and sharing your story. But the outline of the story is this: Mackenzie was raised in a wealthy St. Louis suburb by a single mother who was repeatedly abusive, according to two state agencies. One trigger for the beatings was sexual abuse by one of her mother's boyfriends, Henry Lovelace, Jr., a fitness trainer and multiple winner of the Missouri's Strongest Man competition in his weight class, which her mother warned her never to talk about. [3], Before that happened, Fierceton withdrew from the scholarship on her own. But I think a lot of it stems from the current policies and practices of federal and local funding and what kind of programs theyre funding for kids. She, to my knowledge, has stuck by that. It didnt have any facts of the case. And I turned over all this information to his widow. And I was the one who uncovered my classmates death. [2], Shortly after the Rhodes investigation began, Rafaelle was informed that Penn was proposing to revoke Fierceton's bachelors on the grounds of her apparent self-misrepresentation. "[2], In December, an anonymous 22-page letter was sent to the U.S. office of the Rhodes Trust, which administers the scholarship program. [2], The next morning, when Fierceton awoke, Morrison told her she was taking her car keys and telling the school she was sick. Fierceton began secretly documenting physical and psychological abuse by her mother, a radiologist, during her high school years. MF: Yeah, so Penn First for the whole FGLI community. She was an independent student when she applied. And then as the different internships, and then I went to get my masters in social work and all of this happened, I started to see that continue in different capacities while I was in different roles, seeing that theme in this relationship between foster care and the criminal justice system. [1]:111112, Penn's investigators asked Fierceton why she had pretended to be asking on another's behalf when she made her queries within the university. She was abused, but there is not enough blood." Are we going to see these injuries? What about Rhodes? "She was falling apart under the academic stresses at school and was exhausted, and I believe looking for an out." There, she wandered the hallways until she found the history teacher, and collapsed. And I also think we have this racist and classist notion of who can be an abuser or who can cause harm. Who would hold party elites accountable to the values they proclaim to have? RG: Right. MF: So [laughs] I feel like I could go on for hours about that. MF: And with that, like you said, notion of: Well, theres no way that you went to private school and all of this could have still happened, or that you could be low-income now and this idea that socioeconomic status is permanent. As youve had time to sort through this, what do you think was driving Penn to go through this process, which they had to know, at some level, would cost them? In the lawsuit filed on Dec. 21, Fierceton, a 2021 School of Social Policy . My understanding is there were two anonymous emails. Fierceton joins Ryan Grim to discuss the saga of her battle with UPenn and why the Ivy Leagueinstitution seems to have so much trouble recognizing the complexity of poverty in America. MF: Yeah, it was, things like that where I simplified all of these foster kids that youre living with a biological family who have kids, which I would say are foster siblings. And so they had to see some benefit to them in doing this. Fierceton said that when she had applied to SP2 as a sophomore she had cleared it with the school's associate director of admissions, who told her that a student's biological parents were not relevant to that definition, and said the same thing in 2020 (Penn's OSC interviewed the associate director and SP2's associate director for financial aid whom Fierceton said she had a similar conversation with; neither remembered speaking with Fierceton about the issue)[1]:111112). The court had ordered Fierceton and Morrison into family therapy, but the former was too afraid of the latter to do it. I think there were almost 30 of those letters again, very similar to who had given statements in the past to corroborate my abuse as well as leaders in the FGLI community saying yes, we started this community. [2] The psychologist testified that she had seen both mother and daughter during 2007 and 2008. verbally. After the trial ended with Morrison prevailing and the agency ordered to remove her name from the child-abuse registry, Fierceton resolved to change her last name. And so the fact that shes continued pursuing you to me kind of demonstrates the entire case. [2], Morrison's lawyer questioned Fierceton closely about apparent differences between her medical records from the hospital and her description of her injuries in a scholarship application essay the lawyer had obtained, and other details from the latter, such as the "metallic" taste of a feeding tube that was plastic and her claim that she was unable to recognize her own facial features in the hospital mirror, when her medical records showed that her injuries were well short of being even temporarily disfiguring. Mackenzie Fierceton, C'20, has been awarded a 2021 Rhodes Scholarship for graduate study at the University of Oxford. Whereas white parents, a lot of times, it is much harder the bar is much higher to remove them from their homes because their whiteness or possibly class privilege or whatever identities that they have that might not fit a social worker or judges or whoevers involved perception of whose kids should be in the foster system. When she was a teenager, she showed up bloodied and bruised at her elite private school. And theyll openly talk about this. While her yes answer to "At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court?" So those questions came like later on and were really a part of the initial interrogation. There was also the part of me that was terrified. Our grad school had no specific definitions or instructions, but I did have a relationship with the associate director of admissions at the time. And I was in a kind of unique situation where I applied to grad school at the beginning of my sophomore year of college, because I sub-matriculated. Since we began the Reshuffled journey, any mention of foster care grabs my attention, the same with Tracy. Fierceton applied for the Rhodes Scholarship with assistance from Penn's Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. I took photos of the building and sent it to them, and I was connecting them with different people who were in my class, who were in his class. And to me, I'm like I am a household of one, so I am the only person in my family. [2][g], The packages she says she received were supplemented by hangup calls, which a faculty member Fierceton occasionally lived with recalled her receiving in the months preceding the trial of her mother's lawsuit against DSS later in her junior year. And so that was when it really transitioned, the second half of it, into these really intimate questions about my abuse until the point where I was sobbing and couldnt answer the questions anymore.
