I was in college and my friend on my floor had a little attachment … One title was Luigi’s Mansion… My opinions couldn’t be trusted. It manages to power its way through on the strength of its core gameplay and its charm alone, which is impressive in and of itself. Review: Luigi’s Mansion (Nintendo 3DS) By Justin Sharp • 2 years ago 16 Nov 2018 0. Luigi decides to check the place out, but can't find Mario. Most rooms have one, and there is a little alert on your screen to show if there is a Boo in the room and if you are close to them. I don’t just mean that this is a good looking game, either, although for a 2001 Gamecube title the visuals hold up incredibly well and the game has a unique visual charm that makes it immediately engrossing. The key is to explore all 4 sections of the vast mansion, while looking for clues on Mario's whereabouts. Luigi's Mansion remained one of the best demonstrations of the Cube's fire, lighting and water effects- in fact only the Resident. The first here is that almost all of the puzzles are absolutely brainless. This is used to battle a handful of minor environmental ghosts or solve certain puzzles. The atmosphere is scary for a Nintendo game. The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Really charming game that is oozing personality all the way through, Interesting core gameplay and catching the portrait ghosts can be a decent amount of fun, Trying to get all gold frames or the maximum score does at least allow for some challenge, Exploring the house is nice, even if there could be more to explore, Painfully short, and the game can wrap up pretty easily in 5 hours or so, Incredibly easy (if you aren’t going for all gold frames) and there is almost no challenge here until you hit the final boss, For such a small mansion, there is an annoying amount of backtracking or moving to the other side of the mansion to get to the next room, Elemental ghosts wind up being more annoying than anything and really just force you to backtrack to the element you need, Boos are more of a hassle to get than anything and just involve following them from room to room, Puzzles to get portrait ghosts to show their hearts are way too basic and uninteresting, Fighting ghosts is essentially the same for every ghost and beyond the bosses all the fights play out essentially the same, Mansion feels cramped, and there are only a couple of hidden extras to find, Rooms are small with only a couple of things to interact with, meaning you will typically accidentally solve puzzles even if you are confused. The legend continues on the GameCube in an all-new epic adventure for one to four players. Also, you don’t have skin so you don’t need to wash it so I feel like this is at least partially your fault here. The other aspect to the gameplay is the exploration and if you want to get everything you can out of this title you will want to make sure you poke around every corner of every room. This is an absolutely charming game, brimming with this clever design and fun presentation even if the gameplay itself is a bit of a mess. It's essentially Luigi being a 'Ghostbuster' in an old Resident Evil-type mansion, all in a cartoon style. 34 When you are, you can interact with the object by touching it or vacuuming it and if you’re right a Boo will pop up and taunt you like a big ol’ jerk. The second issue is that you can only have one at a time, and you need to vacuum up a different element to use it again. No one is going to go, “Hm. In this game Luigi uses the only arsenal capable of defending against ghosts. I have beat this game at least 7 times and it just seems to never get old. Traveling becomes tedious and you wind up walking back and forth the same hallways because the ghosts can’t be considerate enough to line up in a rational order. Luigi's Mansion (GameCube) review "For the most part, you move from one puzzle to another, with little chance of dying in between. Comment 0. The whole concept is just incredible. However, by the second area you will need to start traveling to different floors to get to all the rooms you need and you’ll realize the game needed some sort of better travel system. You start off with access to only a single room, but by clearing out all the ghosts you will find keys to unlock other doors in the mansion and you will eventually be able to unlock every door in the house. I said the gameplay is very basic, which it is. I highly recommend this game. The sequel would fix this, but the game does not suffer much for its length. Like getting socks for Christmas, it's good and comfortable, but not what we wanted. - I’m really torn on Luigi’s Mansion. Fortunately Luigi is sort of saved by an odd old man named Prof. E. Gadd. That’s right, the guy Bowser had been trying to unsuccessfully defeat for fifteen years gets taken down by a piece of junk mail. Armed with a flashlight and a customized vacuum cleaner, Luigi must rid the mansion … There is something entertaining about tracking down a portrait ghost and trying to figure out what you need to do in order to capture it. It is such a cleverly put together package. A fire element is available in the room and there are two empty bonfires to interact with. They’re supporting twenty different Nigerian princes at this point and probably own like ten different timeshare properties across the Mushroom Kingdom. Since you have no idea what is going to be in a room, you can’t guess which one you’ll need and it leaves you backtracking to the nearest element which can be on a completely different floor. Luigi's first game and one of the creepiest games I've played (without the horror aspect), Luigi's Mansion, is one of those little gems people. Luigi can catch ghosts by flashing them into shock, which then leaves them open to be vacuumed. I don’t know how Luigi and Mario fell for this. With a weird atmosphere and surreal music music mixed with unique gameplay and stunning visuals, this game outclasses every other Mario game. You have 100 health and at worst they only do 10 damage at a time, so you’d need to get hit 10 times in a fight to lose which is borderline impossible. Even portrait ghosts, while interesting thematically, are complete pushovers. There is just no reason for dividing up enemies like this other than to pad out the short runtime, and it isn’t fun to just walk back and forth for big chunks of time. Luigi's Mansion is fun while it lasts ¿ it really is. You’ll need to fight off a handful of these to clear a room sometimes, and others you’ll find in the hallway which can just be ran past if you’re in a hurry. This is particularly true if you’re going for the highest score and trying to capture the ghosts all in one go as there is some chaotic fun of getting a ghost down to like 20 HP, starting to see Luigi get dragged, and quickly panicking and trying your hardest to get the movement just right so you don’t lose what you’ve worked for. Fortunately people see the game's incredible impact now and frankly so do I. The plot of Luigi’s Mansion is that essentially Mario and Luigi are both morons. Select Your Cookie Preferences. Luigi’s Mansion is not even in the same genre as Mario 64 so those comparisons only came up due to the fact that Mario platformers were previously released as launch titles for Nintendo consoles, and this likely lead kids to assume that Luigi’s Mansion was a platformer because it was a Gamecube … After winning a mansion, it becomes Luigi's job to save Mario from a house full mean, nasty spirits being lead by the Boo's. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. It didn’t even feature Samus or Kirby or Donkey Kong or Fox McCloud or Wario or one of the thousands of Pokemon they have laying around their offices. You’ll get pearls the longer you hold on to them, though, and if you manage to drain them all in one go you get a big pearl which is worth the most cash (and also nabs you the fanciest frame/picture of the ghost back in the gallery). It is completely mindless to capture the portrait ghosts, but it is more of a challenge to try to get them all in one go. The mansion feels like this interesting, living place filled with all these different ghosts. When they’re in rooms you will need to vacuum them up to clear them, but you never fight more than three or so at once and that is only at the very end of the game. Luigi gets mail like this and gives his two weeks’ notice to his boss before booking a plane to Hawaii. Overall though the game provides lots of entertainment but is kind of short. A room will have, at most five or six things to interact with so a lot of the time you can just poke around everything and eventually the ghost will expose its heart. Rooms are small and you typically only need to use what is in the room to solve them with one or two exceptions. They can break off from you if you aren’t quick enough following their movements, and while their health will be drained to the point they broke free, you will have to stun them again in order to try and catch them once more. Drain their health to zero and you’ll end their haunting days and gobble them up into your vacuum. Luigi’s Mansion really is just a good example of good design even if it might be a bad example of good execution of that design. Ghost hunting is a very lightly touched genre in gaming and surprisingly it's a perfect fit for Luigi's cowardly, but reluctantly persevering persona as he desperately fights not only the many ghosts in the mansion, but his own fear to save his older brother. There is also a camera element that isn’t fleshed out nearly well enough where you can take a picture of the ghost’s heart and it tells you what to do. It was called Luigi’s Mansion and it featured Luigi fighting ghosts in a dark and spooky mansion. Either you wait for them to change their animation, you interact with one of the couple of things in the room, or you engage in some preliminary combat where you bonk them a couple of times with something floating around the room. It featured Luigi. This review was partially rewritten in 2018 by the original author due to how terribly it was written. It isn’t a bad idea, but it brings up a couple of issues I’ve already mentioned. It’s going to be a long night for poor Luigi. The Boos aren’t particularly fun to hunt because they are more of a chore than anything else, and rather than actually fight them you sort of have to just follow them around. I know the Mario brothers are old, but nothing quite hammered home just how old they were by showing me they were victims of a postal scam. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is so much fun, so charming, and so smartly designed that, moving forward, I really hope we get more than three of these games every 20 years. They’ll try fleeing, so you want to move the control stick in the opposite direction sort of like you’re battling a stubborn fish. I see all these reasons why I should give it a low score, and part of me wonders if I’m only scoring this as high as I am because I have fond memories of the game from when I was a kid. It sounds easier than the previous cinematic attempts by the Ghostbusters and the Catholic Church, but it's not. Of course, he will also have to get through the fact that he is a complete and utter coward and screams whenever a ghost shows up. It comes to a head in the final area.
